Chapter 8 and 9

Teachers act as designers everytime they get ready to put together a lesson. When a teacher puts a powerpoint together or an acitivity there is some level of design that takes place.

iStopMotion is a type of software that allows students beginning at the elementary level to create their own animated movies and time-lapsed recordings. This software allows students to work on frame by frame editing.

Digital storytelling is used for students to develop a story on paper, then use a camera to shoot the video, later using the footage to put together the digital project on a certain type of software. I believe this assingment could work in the classroom. The digital storytelling would teach the students good orginizational skills.

The Fathom dynamics statistics allows highschool students to visualize large data sets. The software can help with geographical pattern awareness.

I believe that just watching television cannot teach a person how to do anything. A lot of people learn how to do things by acutally being hands on. Using these different types of softwares is always going to be the better choice so that everyone can experince how to do things on their own.

  1. Hands on is the best way to go! Its easy to watch how to do something but you never know what you will encounter when you go to do the activity. So I'm with you when you say people learn more from hands on.

  2. I disagree that people cannot learn an activity by watching television. While there are great benefits to hands on learning, it is entirely possible to learn by simply watching and imitating another person, even if they are only on TV. Many of our earliest lessons as human beings comes from imitating others, and learning from TV is an extension of that.

  3. I agree that watching TV cannot teach someone how to do anything. It is important for a student to interact with others and learn from in class activities. I think that TV can be a helpful aid but some things can only be learned in the classroom.

  4. I would have to agree with Charles Perry that simple things can possibly be learned through just watching TV. I have heard of several instances where people have actually learned new languages by watching television programs in a language different than their own. I believe that hands on is also very important though.
